Magento 1 to Magento 2 Migration

Moving from Magento 1 to Magento 2 is a rebuild, not an upgrade — the platforms are different enough that data, extensions and theme all have to be migrated or rebuilt deliberately. Done well, it's the move that takes an end-of-life store back to a supported, fast, secure platform with years of road ahead. We plan and execute M1 to M2 migrations on a realistic timeline, with your data and rankings intact and your old store live until the new one is verified.

Why it's a rebuild, not an upgrade

Merchants often expect M1 to M2 to be a version bump — install the update, carry on. It isn't. Magento 2 is a different architecture: a new codebase, a new database structure, a new frontend stack. Nothing ports across automatically. That's not a reason to fear it — it's the reason to do it properly rather than cheaply.

Three things get handled separately in every M1 to M2 migration:

Data — products, customers, orders and content move via Adobe's official Magento Data Migration Tool, mapped and validated rather than trusted blindly.

Extensions — Magento 1 extensions do not run on Magento 2. Each one is replaced with its M2 version, an equivalent, or a custom rebuild.

Theme — the M1 theme can't be reused. The storefront is rebuilt — on Luma, or, far better, straight onto a fast Hyvä frontend while you're rebuilding anyway.

What the migration covers

Data migration

Products, categories, customers, orders, reviews and CMS content moved with Adobe's official Magento Data Migration Tool — mapped, validated and reconciled against the source.

Extension rebuild

Your M1 extension stack audited and rebuilt for M2 — vendor M2 versions where they exist, equivalents or custom builds where they don't.

Theme & frontend rebuild

The storefront rebuilt on Magento 2 — Luma if you must, Hyvä if you're sensible, since you're rebuilding the frontend from scratch either way.

SEO preservation

A full 301 redirect map from M1 URLs to M2, metadata and structured data carried across, indexing monitored after launch.

Integrations

ERP, CRM, PIM, payment and shipping connections rebuilt and tested on Magento 2 — the operational stack reconnected, not left behind.

Incremental sync & cutover

The official tool's delta sync keeps M1 and M2 aligned right up to cutover, so the final switch captures last-minute orders and data.

What you receive

  • A Magento 2 store on a supported version (2.4.x) and PHP 8.3+

  • All data migrated with the official tool, validated against your M1 store

  • Extensions rebuilt or replaced, tested on Magento 2

  • A rebuilt storefront — on Luma, or on a fast Hyvä frontend

  • A complete 301 redirect map and preserved SEO configuration

  • Integrations reconnected and tested end to end

  • Clean, documented, version-controlled code, plus a team handover

We don't hand over a black box. The codebase is yours, documented and maintainable — whether you stay with us or take it elsewhere.

What we have built

A real platform migration — Shopify to Magento 2, with the data and rankings kept whole.

Is Magento 1 still safe to use in 2026?

Only with active maintenance. Magento 1 hasn't had official patches since 2020, so a safe M1 store today runs on OpenMage with community patches applied. An unmaintained M1 store accumulates known vulnerabilities — at which point migrating or moving to OpenMage isn't optional.

How long does an M1 to M2 migration take?

Most run three to five months, depending on data volume, how many extensions need rebuilding and how custom the store is. The extension and theme rebuild — not the data move — is usually what drives the timeline. We give a firm estimate after the audit.

Will my Magento 1 extensions work on Magento 2?

No. Magento 1 extensions don't run on Magento 2 — the architecture is different. Each extension is replaced with its M2 version where the vendor offers one, an equivalent, or a custom rebuild. We audit your full extension list up front.

Do you use the official Magento Data Migration Tool?

Yes — Adobe's official Data Migration Tool is the right way to move products, customers, orders and content, and its incremental mode keeps M1 and M2 in sync up to cutover. We map and validate the data rather than trusting the tool blindly.

Will my Magento 1 theme work on Magento 2?

No. The M1 theme can't be reused — the frontend is rebuilt. Since you're rebuilding anyway, it's the natural moment to move to a fast Hyvä frontend rather than recreating the old Luma theme.

How much does an M1 to M2 migration cost?

It depends on data volume, the extension and theme rebuild, and integration depth — the rebuild work, not the data move, is the main cost driver. We scope it precisely after an audit and quote with no surprises rather than guessing high.

Should I stay on M1 via OpenMage instead of migrating?

Sometimes, yes — if the store works, the budget isn't there this year, and a migration would be rushed. OpenMage keeps M1 secure and buys you a calm runway. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line you're on, because we offer both.
